Egg Price Hike: In the Kolkata market, egg prices have increased by almost 25 percent due to winter demand and a recent rise in exports to nations such as Bangladesh. The cost of eggs has risen from Rs 6.50 to Rs 8. This information was provided by some media reports.

Nonetheless, a poultry industry organization stated that the main cause for the increase is not the rise in exports to Bangladesh, since the country is not a typical export market for India. These represent fresh markets for India. Approximately 50 million export orders have been placed from Bangladesh and Malaysia for November and December. Madan Mohan Maity, the federation’s general secretary, informed media, “Egg prices have risen not just in West Bengal but nationwide.” Nonetheless, retail prices must not exceed Rs 7.5 for each egg, considering the wholesale price is Rs 6.7 per egg.

The country is not experiencing a shortage or crisis of eggs. Local vendors mentioned that egg prices rise in winter, but the increase is sharper this year. “The primary reason for the problem is the lack of maize.” We must boost maize production by a minimum of 40 percent or permit unrestricted imports. The need for maize has risen due to ethanol facilities.

These two nations requested 50 million eggs

When asked if boosting exports was another reason, Maity mentioned that Malaysia and Bangladesh had made orders for a combined total of 50 million eggs for November and December, but only 20 million eggs have been exported to date.

Since September, the government of Bangladesh has relied on India for egg imports to stabilize its increasing domestic prices. Eggs from Bengal are primarily exported via the Petrapole-Benapole border. Maity, however, specified that the majority of the eggs exported are sourced from states other than Bengal.
