A massive crowd of devotees had gathered at the Sangam coast during the royal bath of Mauni Amavasya. Due to the crowd’s excessive pressure, the barricading broke, causing a stampede. A massive crowd of devotees had gathered at the Sangam coast at 2 a.m. During this time, a part of the barricading fell, and there was a stampede. The situation went out of control, and people started running here and there. The belongings of many devotees were down, causing chaos. An eyewitness said, “We were going comfortably, then suddenly the crowd came, there was jostling. We tried to escape, but there was no space. Everyone got scattered. Many people have been injured. The situation is such that it is not known what is happening.”

As soon as the stampede was reported, teams of police, paramilitary force and fire brigade reached the spot. The fire service’s all-terrain vehicle was already in the Sangam area, and many injured people were evacuated. Chief Fire Officer (CFO) Bharatendu Joshi said that this vehicle was on the spot at the time of the incident, so relief work was started quickly. Former Union Minister Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti also reacted to this incident. She said that what happened was not good. More than 12 crore devotees have come to the Kumbh area. Now, what will happen next will be seen. It is a matter of investigating how the incident occurred. This situation arose due to more crowds than expected. All the camps are complete, and devotees are seen wherever you are. In such a situation, it cannot be said that there was no lack of preparation.

On the occasion of Mauni Amavasya, bathing in Sangam has special significance. On this day, bathing in the confluence of Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati purifies the soul and gives peace to the souls of ancestors. Lakhs of devotees come to Maha Kumbh on this day to earn merit.

The administration has now assured that it will make more stringent arrangements. Improving the security system, implementing new measures for crowd management, and ensuring the safety of devotees should be the administration’s priority.
