But what should you do if there is a mistake in your PAN card or if you have more than one PAN card? In such cases, you need to surrender the PAN card. When Should You Surrender a PAN Card?

If you have more than one PAN card, you must surrender the extra one immediately. The Income Tax Department can take strict action, including:

  1. A fine of Rs 10,000.
  2. A minimum jail term of 6 months.
  3. Both fine and imprisonment in some cases.

How to Surrender a PAN Card (If You Have Two)

You can surrender your PAN card both online and offline.

Online Process:

  1. Visit the NSDL website.
  2. Select “Changes or Correction in existing PAN Data/Reprint of PAN Card” from the application type drop-down menu.
  3. Fill out the form and submit it.
  4. A token number will be sent to your registered email ID.
  5. Note the token number and click on “Continue with PAN Application Form”.
  6. Choose “Submit scanned images through e-Sign” on the new webpage.
  7. Enter the details of the PAN card you want to keep. Click Next.
  8. Upload required documents (photo, signature, identity proof, etc.).
  9. Make the required payment and download the receipt.
  10. Send a copy of the receipt along with two photographs and other necessary documents to the NSDL office.
  11. Label the envelope as “Application for PAN cancellation” along with the receipt number.

How to Surrender a PAN Card After Death

If you are moving abroad, have incorrect details, or have lost your PAN card, you can visit the nearest Income Tax Office and apply for cancellation. Submit a written application stating the reason along with all necessary documents.
