The Secretary General of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Datuk Awang Alik Zeman, announced that this extension is connected to Malaysia’s forthcoming ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025 and the preparations for Visit Malaysia Year 2026.
The visa liberalisation initiative, initially introduced in December 2023, enables Indian tourists to enter Malaysia without a visa for a duration of up to 30 days. Indian citizens must show a return flight ticket upon arrival and evidence of adequate funds, like a bank statement or credit card, to enter the country.
The expansion of the visa waiver demonstrates Malaysia’s dedication to drawing tourists from important markets, with corresponding exemptions given to Chinese citizens. At present, two airlines provide flights connecting Kolkata and Kuala Lumpur, thus enhancing the link between the two nations.

Indian travelers have significantly contributed to Malaysia’s tourism industry, with more than 735,000 Indian tourists arriving in Malaysia in 2019 prior to the pandemic. Following the implementation of the visa waiver, there was a notable increase in Indian tourists, exceeding one million in 2024. From January to November 2024, Malaysia attracted 1,009,114 Indian visitors, marking a notable rise of 47% in comparison to 2019 and an impressive increase of 71.7% compared to the prior year.
