Fact Check: Is the RBI going to issue Rs 5,000 notes? Big update revealed

After the demonetization process, the Rs 1,000 notes were phased out, followed by the Rs 2,000 notes, which were also discontinued shortly after. Recently, a rumor has been circulating on social media claiming that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is set to introduce a Rs 5,000 note. Accompanying this rumor is an image of the supposed new note that has also gained traction online. Let’s explore the truth behind this viral claim.

Is the Rs 5,000 note really on the way?

The PIB’s Fact Check Unit has addressed this viral message, clarifying that the RBI will not be issuing any such note. This information is entirely false. Currently, the only legal tender in India includes notes of 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, and 2,000. Additionally, since 2023, the RBI has ceased the printing of Rs 2,000 notes and has encouraged individuals to deposit any they may possess.

What does the viral post say?

In the viral post, a user claimed, “New Rs 5,000 notes to be issued. RBI has provided this information. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will soon release new Rs 5,000 notes.” However, the PIB’s Fact Check team has countered this assertion on X and other social media platforms, stating that the news is completely unfounded and that the RBI is not planning to issue such a note.
