Mazda CX-5: Mazda is preparing to introduce its next-generation CX-5, nearly nine years after the current second-generation model debuted in 2016. Our spy photographers spotted the prototype of the updated SUV roaming around Los Angeles. It has confirmed that its best-selling model will feature an in-house-developed hybrid powertrain and several other improvements.

Design

Up front, the headlights are slim and curve into the grille, giving a hint of Mercedes EQC vibes. In line with Mazda’s signature styling, the sculpted bumper features a clean, minimalist design with a single cooling intake without any unnecessary clutter.

Along the profile, the squared-off wheel arches look similar to those on the CX-50 but paired with more understated plastic cladding – possibly body-coloured on some trims.

The third-generation CX-5 features a pair of aggressive new taillights that are reminiscent of recent BMW concepts, as well as crisp LED graphics inspired by Mazda’s CX-60, 70, 80, and 90 series. A large tailgate dominates the rear, complemented by an extra dose of plastic cladding on the rear bumper and prominently visible dual tailpipes.

Interior and powertrain

While our photographers couldn’t get a glimpse of the interior, it’s safe to expect Mazda to offer a modern cabin design, high-quality materials, and the latest technology borrowed from the brand’s larger SUVs. Mazda has the knack for creating interiors that punch above their class, and the new CX-5 is unlikely to be an exception.

The real story, however, is under the hood. The upcoming CX-5 will offer an in-house-developed self-charging hybrid powertrain. Unlike the Toyota-sourced hybrid in the CX-50, this new electrified system is built around a more efficient combustion engine.

Mazda will also equip the CX-5 with its next-generation Skyactiv-Z powertrain, which is set to debut by 2027. While details are scarce, Skyactiv-Z promises a big leap in efficiency and performance.

The second-generation CX-5 originally debuted in late 2016, with a mid-cycle update arriving in 2021. It has consistently been a best-selling model for Mazda, holding its own against domestic rivals like the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, and Subaru Forester.

The new Mazda CX-5 is expected to debut in the coming months, with a US market launch likely taking place as a 2026 model year – unless Mazda moves it up to a 2027MY.
